Top 7 things to do when you’re bored before your first semester starts

1. Prepare a move-in checklist
If you’re going to be living in the residence halls, the Housing Office website has a Move-In Day link that provides suggestions on what you might want to bring (housing.berkeley.edu). In addition, consider the following:

• A fan for your room
• Quarters for laundry
• A filtered water pitcher
• Extension cord
• Flip flops
• Social Security Card and other ID (needed if you plan to get a job)
• Umbrella and/or rain jacket
• One nice dress-up outfit (for interviews or a night on the town)
• Some warm clothes for layering up on cool nights
• Medicine, insurance cards, doctors’ numbers, etc.
• Driving directions to Berkeley

2. Check the Bear Facts website
You should make a habit of checking the Bear Facts website (bearfacts.berkeley.edu). This is where you can update your contact information, check your billing statement, view your course schedule (and see if you’ve been moved from any waiting lists over the summer) and review your Financial Aid offer. Updated nightly!

3. Sign up for your Phase II courses
Phase I was just the beginning. You’ll fill out the rest of your schedule during your assigned Phase II appointment time. You can check for your Phase II appointment on Bear Facts (see #2 above). Check the Registrar’s website for course add/drop deadlines, in case you sign up for a class you might drop later (http://registrar.berkeley.edu).

4. Contact your future roommate(s)
In early August (or December for spring admits), you will be sent an email from the Housing Office telling you what residence hall you’ve been assigned and who your roommate(s) are (if they’ve allowed their contact info to be released). Give them a call, say hi, and figure out who’s going to bring the fridge.

5. Contact faculty and/or departments for waitlisted courses
If you’re on the waiting list, and you really want the course, don’t be shy about making yourself known to the instructor (and getting more information on how students will be enrolled from the waitlist).

6. Get your Hepatitis B immunization and figure out your insurance coverage
If you’re under 19 years old on the first day of classes, proof of Hepatitis B immunization is a condition of enrollment.

7. Get some rest, spend time with friends and family, and read one book for fun
