As part of a targeted effort to provide the most positive environment
possible for its youth athletes, University Village Recreation
is sponsoring a coaches workshop in conjunction with Positive
Coaching Alliance (PCA) on November 4th. PCA, a Stanford University-based
non-profit organization, works with coaches, organizational leaders
and parents to more effectively teach young athletes not only
how to win, but also how to learn about teamwork, discipline,
respect and goal-setting through their sports experience.
The two-hour session, to be given at University Village Community
Center, 1123 Jackson Street in Albany, teaches parents how to
best support their kids in sports. “It addresses how parents
can help coaches and league administrators establish and maintain
a positive competitive environment,” says Dawn Martin-Rugo,
Director of Recreation at University Village. “The workshop
also gives parents tips for discussing occurrences in college
and professional sports with their kids to bring out life lessons,”
she adds.
All parents of children involved in competitive sports are invited.
University Village Recreation is sponsoring the workshop, so admission
is free (or $5 for guests if you wish to have a workbook). For
additional information or to register for the event, please contact
University Village Recreation at 510-524-4926 or email us at uvrec@berkeley.edu.
About Positive Coaching Alliance
PCA was formed in 1998 to "transform youth sports so sports
can transform youth." PCA offers workshops for youth sports
leaders on how to create an organizational culture that Honors
the Game; for coaches on how to be "Double-Goal Coaches"
who want to win (goal #1) but have a second, more important, goal
to use youth sports to teach life lessons to young athletes; and
for parents on how to help your child get the most from the youth
sports experience.
